Copic Color Wheel

The colors in Copic markers are organized using a unique "Copic Color System" allowing users to select colors intuitively. The system is broken down by Color Family, Blending Group, and Intesity Value, based on these criterias users will be able to understand the color code printed on the cap.

COLOR FAMILY & NAMES

Tahitian blue Copci

The letter represents which color family the marker belongs to: B is for blue, C for cool gray, RV for red-violet, etc.

Chromatic colors which have characterizing hues such as red, blue and yellow are divided into 10 levels starting with 0 through 9. While Achromatic colors are classified based on the absence or presence of color such as white, grey and black.

Copic divides its grey colors into four color families, creating 46 different shades of grey. All colors follow the same basic rule except for the Earth (E) color family.

COLOR NAMES

Tahitian Blue Copic

In addition to traditional color names, many colors are newly-named according to the changes of the times, and expansion of range of human activities (e.g. “Abyss Green” and “Stratospheric Blue”).

BLENDING GROUP (AKA SATURATION NUMBER)

saturation Tahitian Blue

The color family is divided into 10 levels of Blending Group (0-9). The first digit in the color number represents the saturation level of each color. More vibrant colors tend to fall in the 0s, 10s or 20s color number. The higher the number the more saturated the colors become and the lower the number, the colors becomes more de-saturated and closer to grey. An increase in the first digit of the color number will show a saturation difference that could create a different outcome.

The Earth color family is a cluster of various (less-vibrant, bronwish) red and yellow-red colors. While there is a sequence of saturation between Blending Group 0-3, the Blending Group 4-9 are composed of combination of "Wine", "Olive" and "Cobalt".

The Earth color family Blending Group are indedpendet of each other, meaning there is no specfic sequence of saturation between each Blending Group.

INTENSITY VALUE (AKA BRIGHTNESS NUMBER)

The last digit on the color number shows the level of brightness for each color or the intensity value. This value is divided into 12 levels (0000, 000, 00, 0-9). The smaller the number, the color becomes lighter, the higher the number the color becomes darker.

As for the color family Yellow (Y) and Yellow-Green (YG), the intensity and saturation of these colors are originally higher and with a different value for the hue level compared to other color families. Due to this condition, the colors from these two color families are lighter to begin with, even though the number of intensity value is the same compared to the other color families.
